Alan White, who has died aged 72 after a short illness, was one of rock’s most versatile and highly regarded drummers. He will be chiefly remembered for his career with the British progressive rockers Yes, whom he joined in 1972 after the departure of their original drummer, Bill Bruford. Had White’s health not been failing, the band’s forthcoming tour next month would have marked his 50 years with it.
Canada’s supreme court has ruled that life sentences without the chance of parole are both “cruel” and unconstitutional, in a landmark decision that could give more than dozen mass killers who committed “inherently despicable acts” the faint hope of release in the future.
The court unanimously determined on Friday that sentencing killers to lengthy prison terms with little hope of freedom risked bringing the “administration of justice into disrepute”.
The closely watched case centred on the fate of Alexandre Bissonnette, the gunman who killed six worshippers at a mosque in Québec City in 2017, but the court’s decision will possibly have consequences for at least 18 others who are serving multiple life sentences.
Several Toronto schools are out of lockdown two hours after police responded to reports of a man with a rifle walking near Maberley Crescent and Oxhorn Road in Port Union.
Toronto police said calls came in shortly before 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Officers shot the man and paramedics are on the scene, police say.
“There is no wider threat to public safety,” police said shortly after 2 p.m.
Joseph Howe Senior Public School and Sir Oliver Mowat Collegiate Institute are no longer on lockdown as of shortly before 3 p.m.
Charlottetown Junior Public School was previously on lockdown before being moved into hold and secure along with Centennial Road Junior Public School and William G. Davis Junior Public School, according to tweets from the Toronto District School Board.
All three schools are no longer in hold and secure.

If someone had told you in 2019 that none other than the dark spawn of Darth Vader himself, Liz Cheney, would be staring in the cast of a primetime political extravaganza we’d have told them to put down the crack pipe. But, here we are.
According to Hugo Lowell of that loveable limey leftist rag ‘The Guardian’ reports that the January 6 Select Committee has scheduled six hearings, with the first occurring Thursday, June 9, at 8 p.m. Eastern time. The last hearing will take place on June 23, also in primetime. There will also be four 10 a.m. hearings on June 13, 15, 16 and 21 which could preempt the cackling hens of “THE VIEW’ and throw some wine-soaked suburban housewife Biden voters into a tizzy, or absolute orgasm depending on their consumption.
The select committee appears to be planning for the hearings to be extensive affairs. The prime-time hearings are currently scheduled to last between 1.5 and 2 hours and the morning hearings between 2 and 2.5 hours. A select committee member will lead each of the hearings, but top investigative lawyers who are intimately familiar with the material will primarily conduct the questioning of witnesses to keep narrative tightly on track. Each presentation will focus on a theme and feature witness testimony, with video and still images projected on screens to reinforce the narrative.
Lowell reports that the hearings are divided into cute color coded teams :
The “purple” team has focused on the militia groups, while the “gold” team has examined Trump’s efforts to overturn the election. The “red” team has looked at Stop the Steal, the “green” team at the financing for January 6, and the “blue” team at the government response.
No word if appropriate color jerseys will be worn. Go Team.
As Lowell notes, “the select committee is attempting to connect the dots to make a connection of Trump’s political speech January 6 and the militia groups’ violence at the Capitol.
I’m sure the video of the capital Police throwing flash bang grenades into the crowd before the rush for the capital doors and the Police standing inside directing traffic won’t be part of the presentation, but just the violence at the capital steps and the sporadic and unnecessary vandalism.
It should be noted that the Washington Post last week praised Liz Cheney for pushing harder than the Committee’s Democrats to go after DJT and subpoena the congressional Republicans. Porr gurl got herself booted out of leadership and will likely lose her congressional seat …
I found it ominous when Bruce Jenner called himself Caitlyn and scooped up a Woman of the Year award from Glamour. It was considered so important to call this man a woman that Twitter created a bot to correct anyone using male pronouns for him. My fears were confirmed as women were slowly erased from society. Signaling a possible change in courage, Republicans are now pushing back.
The effort to delegitimize women seemed to be unstoppable. A man calling himself Amy was touted as the first woman to win a million dollars on Jeopardy. Will Thomas, aka Lia, has become notorious for throwing women out of competitive swimming. Men calling themselves women were emboldened to invade women’s safe spaces by the mere proposal of the Equality Act, a bill that has failed to garner enough support to pass but that, if passed, would prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender identity.
It might be well to pause here and ponder the fact that, while the word “discrimination” has come to be a pejorative, it used to mean the quality or power of finely distinguishing or perceiving a difference. In other words, it is not negative to discriminate between a woman and a man calling himself a woman. It is simply a recognition of a biological fact, but I digress. What is important is that there is a growing backlash to men taking the place of women.
Republicans have introduced a bill known as the Women’s Bill of Rights to create protections for biological women. Rep. Debbie Lesko, R-Ariz., who is sponsoring the bill, told Fox News,
I am proud to introduce the Women’s Bill of Rights to affirm the importance of acknowledging women and their unique and distinguishing characteristics and contributions to our nation. As the Left continues to erase women, we must fight for women and their place in our society. Whether it’s keeping the word “mother” in written law, or ensuring women’s domestic violence shelters do not have to accept biological men, we must stand up for women.
Indeed. It’s particularly telling at this point in time, during a baby formula shortage, that no transgender woman has emerged to feed a baby from “her” own body …
Pandra , stating numerous , well thought out facts , now contradicts herself ;
… That’s because a transgender woman is , in fact , a man , and lacks the equipment ‘ that God ‘ gave real women to feed babies with …
She indicates her belief in a man made fiction … And then jumps over the fence to the ‘ fact ‘ side of things , referring to ‘ science ‘ …
… It’s time to follow the science and recognize that real women need protection if we are to keep our rightful place in society as mothers and as individuals who are representative of the sex that we were born with.
