The finance minister for Canada’s most populous province has resigned after going on a Caribbean vacation during the pandemic and apparently trying to hide the fact by sending social media posts showing him in a sweater before a fireplace.

Ontario’s premier, Doug Ford, said on Thursday he had accepted Rod Phillips’s resignation as minister hours after Phillips returned home from a more than two-week stay on the island of St Barts despite government guidelines urging people to avoid non-essential travel.

“Travelling over the holidays was the wrong decision, and I once again offer my unreserved apology,” Phillips said in a statement confirming his resignation.

In a video posted on Twitter on Christmas Eve, the sweater-wearing finance minister was shown drinking eggnog beside a fireplace with a gingerbread house and a little Christmas tree.

“I want to thank every one of you for what we are doing to protect our most vulnerable,” Phillips said about Ontarians hunkered down at home because of the pandemic over the Christmas holidays.

But Phillips himself had been enjoying a Caribbean vacation since 13 December on St Barts, a French island popular with the rich and famous, even as his Twitter account had suggested he was in snowbound Ontario.

“I should have said get your backside back into Ontario and I didn’t do that,” Ford said.

“This is a devastating blow to the government and Ford personally because, as he has admitted, he knew that Phillips was in St Bart’s and did not upbraid and order him back immediately,” said Nelson Wiseman, a political science professor at the University of Toronto. “Ford only did so once the news of Phillips’s absence became public.”

A Virginia judge issued an opinion in which he stated that a black man who was being tried on charges of eluding police must not have his trial in one of the courtrooms used during the coronavirus pandemic because those larger courtrooms have numerous portraits of white people.

On Monday, Fairfax County Circuit Court Judge David Bernhard wrote of the prospective trial of Terrance Shipp on January 4, saying “criminal defendants are disproportionately of color and judges disproportionately white … the Court is concerned the portraits may serve as unintended but implicit symbols that suggest the courtroom may be a place historically administered by whites for whites.”

The broader concern is whether in a justice system where criminal defendants are disproportionately of color and judges disproportionately white, it is appropriate for the symbols that ornament the hallowed courtrooms of justice to favor a particular race or color. Evaluation of this matter is left at present to the sound discretion of each presiding judge. There may be contrary views holding the dignity of the Court process is not offended by celebrating the service of prior judges with display of their portraits.

However, in weighing the interests of honoring past colleagues against the right of a defendant to a fair trial, the Court is concerned the portraits may serve as unintended but implicit symbols that suggest the courtroom may be a place historically administered by whites for whites, and that others are thus of lesser standing in the dispensing of justice. The Defendant’s constitutional right to a fair jury trial stands paramount over the countervailing interest of paying homage to the tradition of adorning courtrooms with portraits that honor past jurists.

“The prevalence of portraits of white judges in the courtrooms of the Fairfax Circuit Court, which constitute some forty-five (45) out of forty-seven (47) individuals, while not emblematic of racism on the part of presiding judges, certainly highlights that until the more recent historical past, African Americans were not extended an encouraging hand to stand as judicial candidates,”

Bernhard stated, adding, “The low hanging rotten fruit of overt racism is easily identified and picked off to strengthen the tree of society. The more conventional symbols which to some impart tradition, and to others subtle oppression, are less comfortably addressed. The ubiquitous portraits of white judges are such symbols.”

It’s a good thing that it’s better to give than to receive, because it looks like actual taxpayers are giving a LOT more money than those negatively impacted by the pandemic are going to receive. 

As always, the powerbrokers in Washington have packed a long-delayed (to rob Donald Trump of any pre-election credit) Covid relief bill with copious amounts of pork projects which have nothing whatsoever to do with public health or the pandemic. They do, however, bring home the bacon for a wide variety of special interests:

• $453 million to Ukraine (maybe hiring Hunter Biden was a good investment after all!)
• $10 million for “gender programs” in Pakistan.
• $1.3 billion to Egypt
• $700 million for Sudan
• $130 million for Nepal
• $4 billion for Navy weapons procurement, $2 billion for the Space Force, and another $2 billion for
  Air Force missiles (in fairness, all of this sounds WAY more effective than Purell).
• $208 million to upgrade the Census Bureau’s computer systems (perhaps with Dominion software
  to help “accurately count” the number of people who’ll need new Democrat representatives).
• $40 million goes to the Kennedy Center (presumably to fill the currently unused space with hospital
   beds and ventilators.)
• $193 million for federal HIV/AIDS workers to buy cars and insurance overseas
• Funding for a new museum offering programming, education, and exhibitions on “the lift, art, history,
  and culture of women.” (Hopefully with a full wing devoted to the women of The View, and security
  guards to keep them from escaping)
• Funding for education measures to teach consumers not to store portable fuel containers for flammable
  liquids near an open flame. Hey, who knew that bucket of gasoline by the fireplace was a bad idea?
• And much, much more…

Even though the bill is allocating a total of $900 billion, all of those pork projects really add up. So how much is left for the poor workaday bastards (like you!) who’ve seen their jobs and businesses disappear, their savings erode, their kids turned away from schools, and suffered through nine months of home incarceration (with more to come)? Howzabout a one-time check for 600 smackaroos?!

What’s that you say? $600 amounts to a fart in a hurricane and isn’t enough to pay the bills? Well, Congress agrees! Which is why they’re sending checks for up to $1800 to illegal aliens. A bit of news which is made ironic by the fact that the politicians have surely played this joke just to enjoy the look on our faces, but at a time when our increasingly haggard faces are still covered by makeshift masks.

McDonald’s China ‘ Oreo x Spam burger ‘ ?!!!

McDonald’s has just released a bizarre new creation from its test kitchens in the form of a new burger. The new addition comes with a full cast of unlikely burger characters such as Spam, crushed Oreo pieces and a creamy sauce. McDonald’s China is the birthplace of this unique menu item called Oreo x Spam burger which was launched on December 21.

The latest burger creation features two extra-thick slices of Spam topped with Oreo crumbs and the brand’s classic burger sauce. The official McDonald’s China website describes the taste of the Oreo x Spam burger as “tender and juicy, full of meatiness and with a hint of sweet aftertaste.” The experience will surely give you an imaginable double surprise.

While many were not too keen on getting first dibs on the strange creation, some have been quite curious to give the limited edition burger a try. For one day only this week, diners were invited to taste the unique burger as part of its “members only” promotions which offers special discounts and offers to patrons every Monday.

In an article from CNN, McDonald’s China communications manager Abbie Xie views the unique burger as a trending food among today’s youngsters.

“It has a very strong meaty and satisfying texture. The flavorful and crispy Oreo, on the other hand, is a snack youngsters are familiar with. By creatively combining the two foods, it doesn’t only showcase the collision of tastes and textures, it is also quite topical socially,” Xie said.

There is still a place for places like the Dice Bar. It is where memories were made, where people went to meet other people. Sometimes they might have only had a tenner but they could still come in, have a couple of pints, talk to people and see what happened next. Now what options do they have? They can buy five cans of cheap lager and sit at home on their own and get more depressed.

 I have heard from a lot of customers that they are heartbroken that we are gone for good. Personally I am devastated. I helped to build the whole Smithfield area and it took a lot of effort on the part of many people to get it to where it is – or was. The authorities have done terminal damage to the pub trade, for whatever reason. There will be a lot of pubs that simply won’t survive.

Sadly , this is happening all over the globe …

“Evidence used to conduct this assessment includes more than 50 lawsuits and judicial rulings, thousands of affidavits and declarations, testimony in a variety of state venues, published analyses by think tanks and legal centers, videos and photos, public comments, and extensive press coverage,” the report claims.

Additionally, the report cites affidavits alleging the exploitation of the elderly and the infirm by “effectively hijacking their identities and votes” and accuses Democrats of using the coronavirus pandemic to relax voter ID requirements to the point that ballot harvesting and fraud could slip by unnoticed.

The report outlined incidents in the key states of Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, where ballots allegedly were illegally harvested and dumped into drop boxes.

The election was marred with examples of dead people voting, according to the report.

“In Pennsylvania, for example, a statistical analysis conducted by the Trump Campaign matching voter rolls to public obituaries found what appears to be over 8,000 confirmed dead voters successfully casting mail-in ballots,” the report claims. “In Georgia — underscoring the critical role any given category of election irregularities might play in determining the outcome — the estimated number of alleged deceased individuals casting votes almost exactly equals the Biden victory margin.”

The report concludes: “The ballots in question because of the identified election irregularities are more than sufficient to swing the outcome in favor of President Trump should even a relatively small portion of these ballots be ruled illegal.”

None of this evidence has been rejected by any court; all have refused to consider it citing a variety of jurisdictional hurdles.

In almost none of the counties whose votes are disputed was the Dominion system examined. In Maricopa County Arizona the vote officials are refusing to honor a subpoena to provide the machines for examination. In the only county where they have been examined (Antrim, Michigan) the analyst who audited the system reports that the machines flipped Trump votes to Biden.

Yet the SCOTUS does not want to scrutinize this ?!!! …

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was briefly tossed the current political football of language laws earlier this week.

And while his answer may not have been exactly what Quebec Premier François Legault wanted to hear—unlike what new Conservative leader Erin O’Toole has said—it suggested that Ottawa is considering giving French some extra legal protection within Quebec.

“ I would like to highlight that I completely agree with the former premiers of Quebec and [with] Quebecers who are concerned by the decline of the French language, and I am as well ,” Trudeau said.

The prime minister was asked in a Tuesday press conference about the two levels of language laws : federal and provincial.

On the federal level , there’s the Official Languages Act , the legislation meant to ensure bilingual federal services across Canada.

Bill 101, meanwhile, is provincial and is concerned with protecting and promoting French as the primary language in Quebec—including attention-getting measures like cracking down on English street signs, but also mandating that many Quebec businesses must operate in French as their day-to-day  language …

Drove the Hell outta that car for several years and never put a drop of fluid … OF ANY SORT ( engine oil , hydraulic fluid , steering fluid … never checked the rad ! … ) in it ‘ til near the end of its ‘ run … Took it into where a buddy of mine worked to get a couple of new tires … And walked around the corner to where I worked … Went back at the end of the shift to pick up my car and he gave me shit for runnin’ it BONE DRY !!! LOL !!! … He said he topped everything for me … No charge ! …Good guy …
