But there remain unanswered questions …

Of how the subsidies will work …

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland would not answer …

When asked whether any large companies that take the subsidy would face criteria such as not raising executive bonus pay …

For those that get the subsidy , the government will then cover “ up to 75 per cent ” of employees’ wages — but only for the first $58,700 worth of salary.

That means the maximum amount of subsidy would translate to $847 per week , unless an employer tops up any salary exceeding $58,700 from the business’s own funds.

How all of that will be calculated — and whether it will come in the form of a payroll deduction or a cheque from the government …

Isn’t entirely CLEAR right now …

The plan for the previous 10 per cent wage subsidy had been for the company to receive the subsidy not via cheque but through a reduction in how much income tax it sends to the Canada Revenue Agency …

MPs , who fled Ottawa over concerns about COVID-19 on March 13 , will pocket a pay raise on April 1 , the same day many Canadians will be wondering how to make rent or mortgage payments. It’s also the same day the carbon tax goes up.

MPs currently have a base salary of $178,900. That doesn’t include their housing allowance for their time in Ottawa or the per diems that they get to cover meals while on government business.

Call it an unexpected side effect of the coronavirus crisis that has gripped Canada. We are about to see a class war break out if these social distancing measures keep people out of work and without pay.

I’m not talking about the old-fashioned class wars where the workers try to seize the means of production from their rich bosses ; there won’t be any factory takeovers here.

I’m talking about the bad blood that could soon develop between those private-sector workers being thrown out of work as the government shuts down all manner of businesses and public-sector workers sent home with pay.

I know there are many good civil servants at all levels but especially with the federal and provincial governments who are working hard to deliver on the promises governments have made. Those assistance plans won’t build themselves , they require dedicated staff to get the job done.

Then there are the Service Canada workers : The people who should be there helping the more than 1 million people who have applied for Employment Insurance effectively walked off the job.

The union representing the workers who help Canadians applying for E.I. or all other manner of government services simply said it wasn’t safe to open anymore.

Tell that to the local store clerk who has to keep showing up to work.

The plexiglass barriers we are seeing pop-up across the country in retail establishments are apparently not good enough for Service Canada workers who can go home and collect full pay.

Most private-sector employers have had to lay off staff when shutting down because they can’t keep everyone on payroll without money coming in the door. Not so for government which has a steady stream of cash from taxpayers and can spend well beyond its means.

So , how will this look , how will it feel across Canada if more people lose their jobs and incomes as a result of COVID-19?

Imagine being a laid-off worker wondering how to make ends meet while looking across the street at neighbours who don’t have a care in the world ?

I’m not saying that is the case for every civil servant. Some , perhaps , will have a spouse who loses a job.

None of it , though , quite the same as being told there is no work and “we don’t know when you can come back, please go apply for E.I. Just not in person at Service Canada.”

We’ve long known that civil servants get higher pay , better benefits and increased job security than their private-sector counterparts. Study after study has shown this.

Now we will see just how much better they have it. Will they actually get it , though ? …

An Australian astrophysicist has been admitted to hospital after getting four magnets stuck up his nose in an attempt to invent a device that stops people touching their faces during the coronavirus outbreak.

Dr Daniel Reardon , a research fellow at a Melbourne university , was building a necklace that sounds an alarm on facial contact , when the mishap occurred on Thursday night.

The 27 year-old astrophysicist ( ?! ) , who studies pulsars and gravitational waves , said he was trying to liven up the boredom of self-isolation with the four powerful neodymium magnets.

“ I have some electronic equipment but really no experience or expertise in building circuits or things ” he told Guardian Australia.

Apparently … Not enough experience !!! …

“ I had a part that detects magnetic fields. I thought that if I built a circuit that could detect the magnetic field, and we wore magnets on our wrists , then it could set off an alarm if you brought it too close to your face. A bit of boredom in isolation made me think of that ”…

However , the academic realised the electronic part he had did the opposite – and would only complete a circuit when there was no magnetic field present.

“ I accidentally invented a necklace that buzzes continuously unless you move your hand close to your face ” he said.

“ After scrapping that idea , I was still a bit bored , playing with the magnets. It’s the same logic as clipping pegs to your ears – I clipped them to my earlobes and then clipped them to my nostril and things went downhill pretty quickly when I clipped the magnets to my other nostril ”…

Reardon said he placed two magnets inside his nostrils , and two on the outside …

At the hospital , a team of two doctors applied an anaesthetic spray and manually removed the magnets from Reardon’s nose.

“ When they got the three out from the left nostril , the last one fell down my throat ” he said. “ That could have been a bit of a problem if I swallowed or breathed it in , but I was thankfully able to lean forward and cough it out … Needless to say I am not going to play with the magnets any more ”…

Medical records from the emergency department said that Reardon did not have difficulty breathing , and denied the presence of further magnets up his nose.

The astrophysicist told Guardian Australia he had ruled out further experiments with the magnets and face-touching , and would find other ways to pass the time while at home.

“ I’m actually getting a lot of work done ” he said. “ Working remotely is not that bad. We are also renovating our house , so I am building shelves , making furniture and doing some tiling ”…

Unfit to judge …

A Manhattan judge on Thursday ordered the release of a career criminal charged with stabbing his girlfriend to death out of concern he could contract coronavirus at Rikers , the Post has learned.

State Supreme Court Justice Mark Dwyer freed Pedro Vinent-Barcia , 63, and 15 other inmates after the Legal Aid Society filed a petition arguing that their detention exposed them to serious medical harm in the midst of a pandemic sweeping through city jails.

Prosecutors objected , citing the brutality of the crime and the defendant’s criminal record.

Assistant DA Patricia Bailey said Vinent-Barcia terrorized Bernice Rosado for months before tracking her to a cellphone repair shop in Harlem on June 29 , 2018 , and repeatedly stabbing her in the chest and back.

The gruesome attack was captured on surveillance video and witnessed by numerous bystanders, according to court papers.

After cops nabbed him , he allegedly asked , “ Is she dead ? I hope so.”

The prosecutor told Dwyer that Vinent-Barcia was arrested in Florida for stabbing another girlfriend in 1993 and biting off a piece of her ear.

The judge ultimately sided with Legal Aid lawyer Corey Stoughton , who stated in court papers that Vinent-Barcia has cardiovascular disease , pulmonary disease and type II diabetes.

“ As a result of his medical conditions and age , Mr. Vinent Barcia is at high risk for severe illness or death if [ he ] contract[ s ] COVID-19 ,” he wrote.

The Legal Aid Society , which represents indigent clients , has argued in their petitions that the continued confinement of elderly and sickly inmates during a pandemic violates their constitutional rights.

“ Clearly , Judge Dwyer felt that a jury should decide on this defendant’s fate , not a virus ” said Office of Court Administration spokesman Lucian Chalfen.

And explain to me how a man , who hunts down his ex-girlfriend , finds ouit where she works … Goes there and repeatedly stabs her … Then states ” I hope she’s dead ” … Gets classified as ” not presenting a threat to public safety ” ?!!! …

He added , “ Extraordinary times call for us all to be flexible , but still to be guided by fundamental principles of safety and justice.”

The working and middle classes , who only a month ago were celebrating the purchase of a new car , a house , a raise , moving out of their parents’ home or the promise of a better job are wondering if they can hold on , and some are waking up to the realization their lives have been turned upside down over a virus that is no more deadly than the flu they got last year.

Secondly … COVID-19 , an exotic-sounding flu-like virus that as of now has a bark that is much , much stronger than its bite.  Relatively speaking ( and with all due respect to those who’ve been infected or have lost a loved one ) , its bite is still underwhelming , which is why the media have been able to scare the pants off everybody and create an irrational level of panic and hysteria : because in reality , it’s not what they’re making it out to be.  

If it were as devastating as advertised , and hundreds of thousands of Americans were getting infected and tens of thousands were dying — figures that would justify the level of insanity and overreaction — the entire tone of the media would be quite different.  It would be somber … And respectful , but most importantly , less sensational.  It’s the irresponsible , tasteless and voyeuristic coverage of the coronavirus by the media that proves they’re manipulating it for their own gain …

Kelly Loeffler , R-Ga., who exploited knowledge provided in a private briefing about the Wuhan virus and its possible impact and along with her husband sold stock worth millions just before the Chinese Wuhan virus spread worldwide and tanked global markets.

The Daily Beast reported Thursday that Loeffler sold stock that was owned by her and her husband on Jan. 24 , the same day she sat in on a closed-door coronavirus briefing as a member of the Senate Health Committee with the Trump administration , with Dr. Anthony Fauci in attendance.

HMMM … Where have I heard that name before ?! …

According to the report , she sold stock in Resideo Technologies ” worth between $50,001 and $100,000.” The company’s stock price ” has fallen by more than half ” since January.

In addition , 27 out of 29 transactions in February by her and her husband were sales. One stock purchase was in a company called Citrix , a teleworking software company , and was worth between $100,000 and $250,000. The company’s stock , as The Daily Beast noted, had seen a bump since the virus outbreak grew.

The report also claims Loeffler and her husband sold jointly-owned stock worth between $1,275,000 and $3,100,000 during the Jan. 24-Feb. 14 timespan , according to filed transactions.

Her husband , Jeffrey Sprecher , is chairman of the New York Stock Exchange …

Trump and top doctor SPAR over unproven drug !!!

In an extraordinary exchange , U.S. President Donald Trump and the government’s top infectious disease expert , Dr. Anthony Fauci , publicly sparred Friday on whether a malaria drug would work to treat people with coronavirus disease.

The scene played out on national television during the daily White House briefing on the outbreak. Anxious for answers , Americans heard conflicting ones from a just-the-facts scientist and a president who operates on gut instinct.

Reporters asked both men – first Dr. Fauci, then Mr. Trump – if a malaria drug called hydroxychloroquine could be used to prevent COVID-19 , the disease caused by the virus. A day earlier , when Dr. Fauci wasn’t with him at that briefing , Mr. Trump had called attention to the drug.

On Friday , Dr. Fauci took the reporter’s question and got right to the point.

“ No ,” he said. “ The answer … is no “…

“ The information that you’re referring to specifically is anecdotal ,” Dr. Fauci added firmly. “ It was not done in a controlled clinical trial , so you really can’t make any definitive statement about it ”…

He went on to explain that the Food and Drug Administration is looking for a way to make the drug available for emergency use , but in a manner that gives the government data about whether it’s safe and effective. Dr. Fauci is director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at NIH and in more than 30 years has handled HIV , SARS , MERS , Ebola and now the new coronavirus.

Currently , there is no medicine specifically approved for treating COVID-19.

But Mr. Trump stuck to what his gut was telling him. As the two men took turns at the podium , Mr. Trump said he disagreed with the notion that there is no magic drug for the coronavirus disease. “ Maybe and maybe not , ” he said … “ Maybe there is , maybe there isn’t. We have to see ”…

He struck an upbeat note , while trying not to directly challenge Dr. Fauci …

“ I think without seeing too much , I’m probably more of a fan of that ,” he said , referring to the malaria drug  … “And we all understand what the doctor said is 100-per-cent correct ”..

MORBNOTE ; Right there he states that he is ‘ optimistic ‘ about the idea … But states ‘ it may work , it may not ‘ … And then explicitly agrees 100 % with Dr. Fauci ! … ” SPARRING ” ?!!! …

“ Look , it may work and it may not work and I agree with the doctor ,” Mr. Trump said … “ I feel good about it. That’s all it is. Just a feeling. You know , I’m a smart guy. I feel good about it … You’re going to see soon enough.”

Now , I watched this press release live … I saw absolutely nothing … Nada … SQUAT !!! … That could fall anywhere near the realm of possibility to describe the speaking points of both Trump and Dr. Fauci as ‘ sparring ‘ …

To the contrary , Trump was stating his ‘ hopes ‘ that efforts ‘ may be successful ‘ and that the drug was being looked into … And the doctor was pointing out the scientific ‘ need to ‘ further study that possibility … Giving the audience straight facts …

FINALLY !!! … Roxham Road is closed …

The past week has seen governments ask most people to significantly change their daily habits. The various restrictions and social distancing measures requested , and in some cases mandated, by government to tackle COVID-19 has been wide-reaching.

Everyone’s plans , everyone’s life , was put on hold.

Except one supposedly protected class of individual : Illegal border crossers.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wisely halted all non-Canadians from flying into the country and shut down the Canada-U.S. border to non-essential travel. But then the question arose of Roxham Road , the illegal border crossing that still sees over 1,000 people cross into Canada each and every month.

The bizarre and irresponsible phenomenon first cropped up in early 2017 , around the time Trudeau recklessly tweeted to the world’s migrants that “ Canadians will welcome you … #WelcomeToCanada”. ( PS. He still hasn’t deleted that post. )

It’s since gone from being a patch of grass into a fully-staffed one stop shop for anyone who wants to skirt the usual protocols , jump the queue and apply for asylum in Canada on their own schedule and on their own terms.

The sensible thinking was that closing the border meant just that , closing the border , and that this would apply to Roxham Road as well.

But the Liberals then confirmed that the illegal border crossing they love to defend would remain open.

Their caveat was that the claimants were being housed for 14 days to make sure they don’t have the virus. It’s troubling that they didn’t stress this from the get go.

That soon appeared to be fake news though , as the head of the border agents union told Postmedia publication The Montreal Gazette that this just wasn’t true. They weren’t being put into the same isolation as a Canadian citizen returning from, say , Florida was expected to do.

Finally , on Friday , Trudeau announced that anyone attempting to enter the country at  Roxham Road would be turned back. He said this had been decided in agreement with the United States.

Yeah !!! … The Trumpster probably told him to quit kissin’ KBec ass !!! …
