Justin Trudeau has stated his priority going forward will be climate change. He sees it as “ unifying.” Many are claiming the election was “ a climate-change election.” I beg to differ on both counts.

Legitimizing the mess we just endured under the explanatory banner that it was a vote about climate change is claptrap , and a pretty low grade of claptrap at that. Not even the watery pilgrimage of the sainted Greta Thunberg to our shores , and the emptying of half the schoolrooms of the nation for what was called a climate emergency march , had any perceptible effect on Monday’s vote.

Were climate change the central motivator , then surely this week would have seen Elizabeth May and a lavish posse of newly elected Greens setting the terms of Trudeau’s survival in the House of Commons , among which the first would surely have been sealing off Alberta from the rest of the country , until the May-Trudeau coalition could find some other place to put it.

Ms. May’s personal vehicle , which we know as the Green party , did make voluminous gains , for she increased its representation by a full 50 per cent. That is , instead of a solid two Green MPs , both from Vancouver Island , there is now one more , this time in New Brunswick , which surely qualifies the Greens as pan-Canadian at last.

But when you’ve got the end of the world as your calling card , and a leader who gladly appoints herself as the instrument of that same world’s salvation — a most powerful pitch — then surely , after 13 years of trying , you should be doing better than electing three candidates in a Parliament of 338. And if , as so many are still saying , this was a climate-change election , then the one leader who has made climate change her brand and banner , and who in a CBC interview stated “ I have to save the whole world” and worse , obviously believes she can , would have done better than adding one more member to an already unwieldy caucus of two.

Why does Mr. Trudeau join the juvenile climate march , seek a photo session with Greta , entertain Bill Nye the ( silly ) Science Guy ? ” If you seek the reason for Western estrangement , check out the front bench of Trudeau’s first term. A dramatic protest or a desperate attempt to hijack the news cycle ? However you look at it , when close to 40 Republicans burst into a closed impeachment hearing on Wednesday , it was an unprecedented moment that some experts warn has pushed the bounds of legitimate partisan attacks.

Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz , one of President Donald Trump’s most loyal defenders in Congress , led the group of Republicans as they forced their way into what’s known as a sensitive compartmented information facility , or SCIF , to disrupt a closed deposition from a Pentagon official in the ongoing presidential impeachment inquiry.

” The American people deserve a public and open process ” Rep. Mo Brooks of Alabama said outside the hearing room, moments before the Republicans barged in.

The Republicans said the storming of the SCIF was necessary to expose what they call the secretive Democrat-led hearings that have denied the president transparency and a chance to face his accusers.

The Democrats are investigating whether Trump used the power of his office to pressure Ukraine into delivering political favours to help his chances in the 2020 election.

“By golly , if they’re going to do it, do it in public ” Brooks said. ” Don’t hide it from the American people. Show your face where we can all see the travesty that you are trying to foist on America and the degradation of our republic that you are engaged in.”

Ya gotta love how these southern American politicians speak in the cutesy way , with ” goshes ‘ and ” by golly’s ” …

But the attack on the impeachment inquiry process , rather than the substance of what has emerged so far, struck some historians as being deliberately disingenuous.

The protest came the day after testimony from the top U.S. diplomat in Ukraine, Bill Taylor , in which he reportedly described various examples of Trump directing staff to pressure Ukrainian officials into investigating his political rival , Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden.

I don’t see the problem with that … If Biden threatened to withhold a billion plus in aid to the Ukrain , until they fired an individual , then that is not only an abuse of power , it’s illegal !!! … The President of the United States has every right … In fact a DUTY ! … To have the possible criminal actions of a Vice President ( while he/she was in office ) investigated …

The writer of this article then places quotes into his reporting that attempt to ‘ delegitimize the actions taken by the Republicans .

To many , the storming of the SCIF on Wednesday appeared to be a direct response to Trump saying a few days earlier that Republicans in the House weren’t doing enough to defend him from impeachment charges. Trump also reportedly had advanced knowledge of what the Republicans had planned.

Cole warned that attacks seemingly directed by the executive branch against the legislative branch take the U.S. into dangerous territory when it comes to the constitution.

Wednesday’s deposition of Pentagon official Laura Cooper eventually took place , five hours after it was scheduled to begin.

But in their attempt to defend the president at all costs , Republicans are continuing to show glimpses of tactics used in authoritarian regimes, said historian Ruth Ben-Ghiat of New York University.

” I don’t see it as a distraction. I see it as a continuation of this contaminated , lawless culture that the Republicans have adopted in order to protect themselves and Donald Trump ” she said.

But she says what happened on Capitol Hill this week was a shocking escalation.

” [ The Republicans ] knew perfectly well they were conveying a message that was a lie and they did it anyway ” she said.
