Today , political apologies are another way of always having to say you’re sorry. In 1990 , then-prime minister Brian Mulroney gave a full apology to Canadians of Italian descent for the internment of Italians during the Second World War …

Now Justin Trudeau wants to make it a hat trick with another apology similar to the one given to Japanese and Ukrainian Canadians. Mr. Trudeau’s motives are so apparent to be almost risible. His Liberal Party of Canada has always counted on the loyalty of Italian Canadians ; now the Prime Minister needs to lock down their support in October’s coming election.

But apologizing to our community – I count myself a member, being a first-generation Italian-Canadian – is wrong for two reasons …

Do Italian-Canadians really want to join the line of those demanding an apology after everything this country has given them ? Do we Italian-Canadians just want a psychic handout to salve our wounded pride ? And how can we as Italian-Canadians ask for an apology when 5,000 Canadian men and boys are buried in cemeteries throughout Italy who died to rid “our ” ancestral home of fascism and Nazism. If we want anything , it’s to avoid having this episode in our history forgotten , but that’s in our hands , not the government’s.

Former prime minister Pierre Trudeau understood that apologizing for the mistakes of the past was a meaningless , never-ending task. The best we can do is try learning from our mistakes. Each generation will be judged and , most likely , judged badly by future generations. We can live with that, but without the apologies.

That’s a lesson fils Trudeau never learned from his father …

Junior all talk , no walk on gun bans …

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s promise to ban “ assault style weapons ” after the next election is great news for law-abiding gun owners and target shooters in Canada.

A ban makes zero sense , will do absolutely nothing to prevent crime , in fact it would increase the number of shootings by diverting government resources away from fighting gangs , and is the last thing law-abiding gun owners want.

So , why is it great news ?

Because , If we’ve learned anything about Trudeau over the past four years , it’s that he doesn’t keep promises.

Trudeau is all sizzle , no steak. He’s all hat, no cattle. All talk , no walk. And , thank God for it.

Announcement. No action. Move on. Repeat.

Trudeau has established a predictable pattern of behaviour on hot-button issues : he makes an announcement , then does nothing about it and moves on to the next shiny object. Wash , rinse , repeat …

In a press announcement , Trudeau accepted there is an ongoing genocide targeting Canada’s indigenous peoples. Genocide is a crime against humanity. Somebody should probably do something about that. What did he do ? Nothing. He moved on.

On Monday , the Liberal government declared a “ Climate Emergency ” in the House of Commons. Emergencies are serious things that normally demand immediate action. What action did Trudeau take ? Nothing. He moved on.

In fact , the very same day , he jetted off to party with the Raptors in Toronto , then back to Ottawa for a meeting before flying to Montreal. Serious stuff , these “ climate emergencies ”.

During the 2015 election campaign , Trudeau promised to end first-past-the-post elections. Did nothing. Moved on. He promised to balance the budget in 2019. Did nothing to make that happen – quite the opposite , in fact. He moved on …

Cap space and friendship , they both come with their price, don’t they ?

On that day , two summers ago , when Patrick Marleau — the indestructible ironman with the soft heart , the presumed San Jose lifer — was pried away from California with the promise of millions , an elusive Stanley Cup shot , and the chance to mentor two of the most exhilarating young stars in the game , everyone with their Grade 10 math credit circled his third year under contract with the Maple Leafs as the tricky one.

The one where he’s 40 years old and the sport is speeding faster than his Reebok Pumps can keep up.

That fact of his age , plus the League imposed team salary restrictions ( The Leafs organization could pay EVERY player on its’ roster 20 million per and still make record profits !!! … ) the young stars have earned their pay increases … Patty doesn’t want to see the Leafs lose Mitch , plus that age thing , that is getting increasingly more difficult to overcome , has a flip side of a more enhanced level of wisdom … He knows retirement is shining brighter as the end of the tunnel opens wider …

By not putting up his own fight , by quietly waiving his no-trade clause and typing out an all-class message of thanks , however, Marleau has armed Dubas with a workable sum so the Leafs can pay Marner.

He know’s it’s for the best …

This exchange — cold but amicable , uncomfortable but essential — is all about clearing room on the deck so Dubas can reel in his big fish and assemble the best roster to contend next winter.

Retire in a year … Marleau family’s preference would be to get bought out and sign a modest , one-year deal back in San Jose … Then , at a youthful ‘ retirement ‘ age of early 40’s , you’ve got millions in the bank , live in a nice , coastal climate … In , no doubt , a beautiful house and property … Around the city you played for for 17 years …

Not bad at all …
